For our May 12th meetup, we are extremely fortunate to be able to welcome Sun's Jan Luehe (a member of GlassFish and Servlet 3.0 spec teams) who has offered to give a talk on Sun's GlassFish open-source Java EE 5 app server, including its upcoming v3 release, as well as Servlet 3.0 Specification! This is an amazing opportunity to hear directly from someone responsible for shaping the future of web development on Java!
GlassFish is an open source community that delivers a production-quality and Java EE 5 compatible Application Server. GlassFish has all the features expected of an enterprise grade Application Server. It has an industry-grade Web services stack that implements the common Web services standards and provides interoperability with .NET platform. It provides out-of-the-box support for clustering, high availability, and load balancing providing up to 99.999% of availability for service and data. The browser-based administration makes it really simple and intuitive to deploy Web and EJB applications, view log files, and perform monitoring functions. The seamless integration with NetBeans and Eclipse simplifies the development cycle. There are many other features that silently operate to provide a robust development/deployment environment for your enterprise applications.
The next version of GlassFish (v3) is upping the ante by providing a highly modular, embeddable, and extensible App Server. It will provide a complete implementation of Java EE 6 and the several specifications defined as part of the platform. The dynamic languages and associated frameworks like Ruby-on-Rails and Groovy-and-Grails will be first class citizens. An extensibility layer is available at administration, monitoring, deployment, configuration, and all other levels that allows you to write custom containers to customize your GlassFish installation.
This talk will walk you through the different features of GlassFish mentioned above. The attendees will learn about the simplicity, ease-of-use and the power of GlassFish through extensive demos. It will also provide a detailed introduction to Servlet 3.0 spec and the roadmap going forward.

About Jan Luehe
Jan Luehe has a background in network security, including trust management, digital signatures, and cryptographic services. More recently, he has been working on several web related technologies in GlassFish, including Servlets, JavaServer Pages (JSP), and JavaServer Pages Standard Tag Library (JSTL) technologies. He is currently helping with the Servlet 3.0 specification and reference implementation, and used to be a co-spec lead of JSR 245 (JSP 2.1).
Besides his involvement with the GlassFish web container, he has worked on high availability support for HTTP and SIP protocol sessions in GlassFish and SailFin clusters, and added support for Converged HTTP sessions to SailFin, which adds SIP and Telco related capabilities on top of GlassFish. Before joining the GlassFish team, he worked on the first release of the OSGi specification and implemented some of its core services for Sun's Java Embedded Server. Prior to that, he led the Java Crytography Extension effort of the Java platform, and contributed to the security architecture of the Java platform.
About Arun Gupta
Arun Gupta is a GlassFish Evangelist focusing on Web Tier at Sun. He was the spec lead for APIs in the Java platform, committer in multiple Open Source projects, participated in standard bodies and contributed to Java EE and SE releases.
