We have another two-for-one special: two great speakers, two great topics, one short evening to cover it all!

In the first presentation, Kristina Chodorow will introduce us to non-relational data persistence in Java using MongoDB, a high-performance, open source, schema-free document-oriented database. Forget about JDBC on this one :-)

In the last couple years, dozens of non-relational databases have appeared to solve problems that relational databases aren't good at. Kristina will go over many of the different types of databases available now and what their benefits, drawbacks, and features are. Most of the talk will focus on creating fast, scalable Java apps by using MongoDB, an easy-to-learn document-oriented database. She will use the MongoDB Java driver to demonstrate how to write a Twitter-like application that scales with users, friending, and messaging. She will also demonstrate how to use the database as a file store by creating a Flickr-like application.

In the second presentation, Rick Hillegas (one of the original developers of Apache Derby) will share his thoughts on Java DB (a.k.a. Apache Derby), a free, pure Java relational database, which is co-bundled in the Java 6 JDK. Rock-solid and feature-rich, Java DB nevertheless fits in a 2.5M jar file. Rick's talk will cover Java DB's history, capabilities, community, and popular use cases.

As before this meetup will be hosted at Google's San Francisco office (345 Spear St @ Folsom St)!

Pizzas will be sponsored by Diana Henninger from TEKsystems and refreshments will be brought in by TBD sponsor!

Be sure to stick around until the end to get a shot at winning books and other interesting goodies from Sun and O'Reilly, as well as a copy of IntelliJ IDEA from JetBrains.

See you on September 8th at 6:30pm!

Note that if you plan to attend, you absolutely need to RSVP before the cut-off date, or you risk not being able to get past the security guard. Even if you are unsure, just RSVP Maybe to add your name to the VIP list :-)

Thank you Aleksandar for hosting the meetup. Kristina did a good job at introducing non-relational database systems for those of us who are use to SQL and Rick gave a good update on the state of Java DB. I kinda Kristina would share a bit more technical insight on storing large file objects and about the recent 1.0 release.

We thought about that. In fact, my friend JM from Adobe offered to stream it via Adobe's Connect solution, but there was not enough time to set it up for this particular event.
With that said, we will be recording this evening's presentations and we'll post the videos to YouTube. We'll also look at real-time streaming options for our future events.

Any chance this event could be streamed? I can't attend in person, but would be keen to attend virtually.
