We are doing the June's event a bit later than usual; this time we are meeting mid-month, instead of on the first Monday. I hope this change still works for your schedules. The venue (Marakana classroom) and the time (6:30pm) are the same as before.

For this event, Kevin Nilson, who co-leads two user groups in the South Bay, has generously offered to do a presentation on Comet, the framework for asynchronous client-server (HTTP) communication that enables event-driven web applications. If you do any kind of web development in Java, you'll want to know about it. Most major Servlet engines (Resin, Tomcat, Jetty, etc.) already support it, so all we have to do is learn how to take advantage of it.

Kevin's two-hour presentation aims to introduce Comet, as well as demonstrate different techniques on how to to use it: simple polling, long polling, and bayeux. As with our past events, you'll have a chance to participate in hands-on "labs" and try it out first-hand. Bring your laptop, or use one of the machines in the classroom.

As always there will be free food and drinks at this event, courtesy of Marakana.

Also, one of you will go home with a free license of IntelliJ IDEA, courtesy of JetBrains.

The space is limited so RSVP sooner rather than later, even if you cannot make it to the event.

See you on June 16th!

    •  Kevin Nilson was very knowledgeable and the hands-on sessions were great.
    •  Kevin did an amazing job explaining what Comet is, the state of the Comet landscape, the direction it is headed, and some of the best practices in the industry. Thanks!
    •  It was educational, and fun. The presenter (Kevin Nilsson) was very good at presentations.
    •  I usually research a meetup topic before I arrive at the meetup, so I am not totally green. Unfortunately, I didn't have time this time and I wish I had so I could have had better questions. The presentation was great and really informative. I liked that it was broken into three labs; this made it more interactive than other meetups. I came into this with really no idea what Comet or Bayeux was and I was really blown away with it. Now I just have to figure out how I can apply this at my company. Good Job, Andy
